When it came down to selecting which supernatural I wanted to work on, there really was no contest. As you all probably know, fairies are brand new to The Sims. I mean sure, werewolves and witches are definitely awesome, but being able to introduce fairies into the game opens a whole new world of opportunity. The chance to create something truly unique and fun for the players is what I was most excited about.

Right after you install The Sims 3 Supernatural, you jump in and Create A Sim to your liking. From here, you can select a fairy and begin customizing it by selecting your wing type and color. Want some pointy ears on your fairy along with a nice, golden skin tone? You can make that happen! Maybe you don’t want to start from scratch. Instead, maybe you want to use one of your favorite Sims that you’ve been playing for some time now. Don’t fret, we planned for that and implemented new ways that you can transform your Sim into a fairy through gameplay.

From the get-go, we knew fairies had to be mischievous. I mean, c’mon, it’s in their nature! We plotted and schemed on how to go about tricking Sims unbeknownst. Through legend, lore, and a bit of creativity from our design team, we found a great combination of distracting gestures combined with fairy magic and fairy traps to keep Sims on their toes. The outcome means that fairies have an entire repository of tricks and traps that they can go through. They must be careful though; some Sims may appear to be oblivious, but instead are privy to exactly what is going to happen. If this is the case, that fairy may just end up getting a taste of their own medicine. Some great examples of fairy tricks and traps are Skivvies, where a fairy can trick another Sim into changing into their own sleepwear, or Inner Beauty, where a fairy uses a little fairy dust to transform a Sim’s appearance and test their true character. Don’t worry though, the results aren’t permanent… that is, if your Sim proves that they have a kind heart.

After we took care of the whimsical, we wanted to move onto the beneficial. Think of a fairy godmother type of role that is able to make other Sims feel better or excel at certain things. For those of you that like to start new families, but don’t like to grind skills all day long, you will definitely want to add a fairy into the mix. Fairies are able to generate unique auras that will affect the fairy and surrounding Sims in different ways such as boosting their moods with the Aura of Soothing or increasing their musical skill gains with the Aura of Creativity. With their auras on, you’ll quickly realize that these aren’t the little sprites you heard stories about when you were younger, they are better!

With tricks, traps and auras aside, fairies still have a plethora of unique ways to interact with Sims and the world around them. For example, a fairy can Playfully Pester another Sim or Play Tag with a werewolf they’ve befriended. We also created several new objects including a Fairy House where fairies can go to satisfy some of their more everyday needs. If your fairy needs to relax or just cut loose, you can always throw a Fairy House Party inside with some of your friends.

The more fairies harness their Powers of the Fae, the more they increase which in turn enhances their current abilities while also unlocking new ones. For example, have you ever been fixing something and dropped a key component into a super tight space that you just can’t seem to reach? You find yourself wishing, “If only my hand or arm were a little bit smaller, I could reach it!” Well wish no more, because as you level up, you’ll be able to unlock Fairy Repairs which allow you to shrink down and repair broken objects. Plant some fairy traps, play some fairy tricks, help out some nearby Sims with a fairy aura, and get rewarded with some cool new interactions? I’ll take it!

lthough fairies increase in their power, it is not limitless and does come with a cost. Fairies have a magic meter that they must maintain in order to continuously use their abilities. Once depleted, it doesn’t stay gone forever. Their power will slowly regenerate over time or they can instantly replenish their magic through the use of an alchemy elixir. Fairies can also regenerate their power at a faster rate by transforming into their true form and performing many of their unique interactions.

I have to admit, it can be pretty fun to be out at lunch with non-game developer friends and say, “I have to get back.  I’ve got a werewolf pack behavior meeting.”  You get lots of shaking heads and comments along the lines of, “How does that job even exist?”  Well, the job title werewolf Producer does exist, at least at Maxis, and even though it’s not always about determining how werewolves and vampires should interactor what happens when a werewolf mates with a fairy, it’s still a sweet gig. 

We determined early on that you can’t have The Sims 3 Supernatural Expansion Pack without werewolves. Once that decision was made, the long debate began on what our werewolves should look like.  When in werewolf form,should they walk on two legs or four? Should they be more humanoid or beastly? That kind of stuff.  Although you’ll have to play the game to fully get to know The Sims 3 werewolf, I’ll try to give you a good idea of what to expect.

The overriding fiction that Andy Busche our werewolf Designer (yep, that’s a real job too) came up with goes something like this:

The werewolf Sim is the embodiment of strength and unbridled emotion.These supernatural creatures constantly try to balance living a relatively normal life, with the effects of the werewolf’s curse; which allows them to change form, from Sim to humanoid wolf-beast. Though werewolves can be fearsome creatures, they do have a tender spot for love and possess a great sense of honor. It is this same sense of honor that restrains them from spreading the werewolf curse recklessly. Instead they choose to live in tight-knit packs and take the utmost care in selecting who may join their number.

While that gives you some idea of what to expect from the werewolves in The Sims 3 Supernatural, you’re probably saying to yourself, “Okay,that sounds cool, but what exactly will I be able to do as a werewolf?”  First off, just like all our other supernaturals (vampire, witch, fairy, etc.), you’ll be able to create werewolf Sims directly in Create a Sim.  You’ll create your human form, as you normally would, and you’ll also have the ability to create your werewolf form, body hair and all!

Once in game, you’ll have the ability to transform into a werewolf right from the get go.  While in werewolf form, you’ll have many new interactions available to perform with normal human Sims and vice versa.  There are also many new werewolf interactions that are specific to other werewolves and to the other supernaturals.  You know you always wanted the ability to inappropriately sniff Sims and maybe show those werewolf teeth to a vampire.

Although your werewolf can transform at will, there will be times were the wolf’s feral natural will take over and your transformation will be unavoidable.  Of course this could happen at the worst times.  Say your werewolf Sim is on a date and their mood becomes too low.  Let’s see how your potential love interest responds to a sudden transformation at the bar. The new lunar cycle will also have an effect on your werewolf Sims.  When the full moon rises in the night sky,there will be no stopping the feral beast within.

Over time, as your werewolf Sim becomes more comfortable with their primal nature, they’ll develop more control over their lycanthropy.  They’ll be better able to control untimely forced transformations. They’ll also become more adept at hunting, whether alone or in packs.  The werewolf’s ability to hunt for specific collectables could come in handy for the new alchemy skill, where certain recipes will require very specific and potentially rare ingredients. 

Hopefully, I’ve been able to give you a sneak peek into The Sims 3 Supernatural werewolf.  Of course,there’s much more to being a werewolf in the game than what I’ve described here, but I’m sure it will be much more fun to discover it for yourself, once you’re playing the game in September.

Kari: The Sims 3 Övernaturligt låter dig skapa övernaturliga varelser från hotfulla varulvar och kraftfulla häxor till busiga älvor och vampyrer med spännande nya egenskaper.  De här övernaturliga simmarna har magiska förmågor, sällsynta drag och nya interaktioner som förbättrar spelet och inför nya kreativa historier. Det finns en anmärkningsvärd grad av anpassningar när du skapar dina övernaturliga simmar, från behåringen på din varulv till formen på dina älvors vingar.

3. Vad är det för nya egenskaper och förmågor i det här expansionspaketet?

Kari: The Sims 3 Övernaturligt introducerar många nya egenskaper, förmågor och färdigheter. Några av våra favoriter är fördröjd åldring för älvor och vampyrer och lycanthropy* färdgihet för varulvar, vilket gör att de kan omvandla sig mellan människa och varulv efter behag, så länge de kan kontrollera sina djuriska instinkter. Det är också några roliga och intressanta egenskaper, som "Övernaturligt fan**" och "Övernaturligt skeptiker***", vilket båda påverkas när simmen interagerar med övernaturliga varelser.

4. Kommer det vara en ny värld i det här expansionspaketet?

Kari: The Sims 3 Övernaturligt introducerar den helt nya världen Moonlight Falls, en skugglik stad full märkliga händelser och mystiska nya föremål.  Inspererad av de dimmiga dalarna i  det lugna nordväst är Moonlight Falls en helt ny bakgrund för The Sims 3, full av hemliga uppenbarelser och mystiska platser för din simmar att utforska, spela i och bygga vidare på.

5. Vad för nya spelfunktioner, föremål och önskningar har lagts till?

Kari: En av de nya funktionerna vi är mest upphetsade över är måncykeln och dess effekt på simmarna i The Sims 3 Övernaturligt.  Spelarna kommer märka konstiga händelser, förtrollade förvandlingar och effekten av magiska krafter när månen ändrar fas. Du kan också anpassa måncykeln för att kontrollera dess varaktighet.

När det gäller nya föremål försöker vi alltid lägga till roliga nya föremål för simmarna att spela med. Vi hade mycket roligt att betrakta och utveckla mystiska föremålsom vi lagt till i den här expansionspaketet, inklusive en glidande bokhylla som döljer ett dolt rum och en magisk kvast som låter dina simmar flyga genom luften!

The Sims 3 Övernaturligt introducerar också nya livsönskningar. Till exempel kan häxor önska att de ska bli en mästare av mörk magi eller mästare av ljus magi, beroende på om  de kastar förhäxningar eller förtrollningar. Älvor kan önska att de ska bli den ultimata luraren och varulvar kan önska att de ska bli ledare av flocken.

6. Kommer det vara några nya karriärer?

Kari: Ja! Simmarna kan bygga upp en karriär som siare i The Sims 3 Övernaturligt.

Inom denna karriär kan simmarna välja att vara en mystisk med en äkta anslutning till den stora bortom eller välja att utnyttja sina kunder som en bedragare, sälja ut psykiska konventioner och ge falska avläsningar.

7. Måste jag spela som ett övernaturligt väsen? Kan jag spela som en normal sim?

Kari: Du har alternativet att spela som ett övernaturligt väsen eller som en vanlig sim som bor i den mystiska nya världen Moonlight Falls. Vem du än väljer att spela som kan du välja att plaska i magiska hantverk, bygga upp en karriär som mystisk siare eller utveckla din alkemiska färdighet för att brygga elixir  med potenta krafter. Elexir ger dig kraften att förvandla en annan sim till zombie, öka din inlärningsförmåga för att få färdigheter snabbare med mera.

8. Kommer det finnas en limited edition till det här expansionpaketet?

Kari: Ja, vi är upphetsade över att få jobba med Popcap's Plant vs. Zombies för att få en exklusiv begränsad upplaga till de personer som förbokar The Sims 3 Övernaturligt. Den speciella limited edition Plants vs. Zombies innehåller den berömda ärtbössan från Plants vs. Zombies som kommer hjälpa dig att skydda dina simmar mot hjärnhungriga zombies som går in på din tomt. Limited edition kommer också innehålla zombiekläder från Plants vs. Zombies.

2. Can I create supernatural Sims directly in Create A Sim?
Kari: For the first time, you can create supernatural beings directly in Create A Sim and play as those witches, werewolves, vampires and fairies from the very beginning of your game. There is a remarkable degree of customization involved in creating your supernatural Sims, from the hairiness of your werewolf to the shape of your fairy's wings.

3. What new traits and abilities are available in this expansion?
Kari: The Sims 3 Supernatural introduces many new traits, abilities and skills. Some of our favorites include delayed aging for fairies and vampires and the lycanthropy skill for werewolves, which enables them to transform between human and werewolf forms at will, so long as they can control their animalistic instincts. There are also some funny and interesting new traits, such as "supernatural fan" and "supernatural skeptic," both of which affect how Sims interact with the supernatural.  

4. Will there be a new world in this expansion?
Kari: The Sims 3 Supernatural introduces the all-new world of Moonlight Falls, a shadowy town full of peculiar happenings and mysterious new objects. Inspired by the misty valleys of the Pacific Northwest, Moonlight Falls is a brand new backdrop for The Sims 3 full of secret revelations and mystical locations for your Sims to explore, play in and build on.

5. What new gameplay features, items and wishes have been added?
Kari: One of the new features we’re most excited about is the lunar cycle and its effects on Sims in The Sims 3 Supernatural. Players will notice strange happenings, enchanted transformations and effects on magical potency as the moon changes its phases. You can also customize the lunar cycle in order to control its duration.

In terms of new items, we always try to add some fun new objects for Sims to play with. We’ve had a lot of fun conceptualizing and building out mysterious items that we’re adding to this pack, including a sliding bookcase that conceals a hidden room and a magic broom that allows your Sims to fly through the air! A variety of new décor items and clothing are available for you to deck out your Sims and their homes in gothic style, fitting with the eerie look of Moonlight Falls.

The Sims 3 Supernatural also introduces new lifetime wishes. For instance, witches may wish to become a master of dark magic or a master of light magic, depending on whether they cast curses or charms. Fairies may wish to become the ultimate trickster and werewolves may wish to rise to be the leader of the pack.

6. Will there be new careers?
Kari: Yes! Sims can build a career as a fortune teller in The Sims 3 Supernatural. Within this career, Sims can opt to be a mystic with a genuine connection to the great beyond or choose to exploit their clients as a scam artist, selling out psychic conventions and giving bogus readings.

7. Do I have to play as a supernatural? Can I play as a normal Sim?
Kari: You have the option to play as a supernatural or as an ordinary Sim living in the eerie new world of Moonlight Falls. However you choose to play, you can opt to dabble in magical crafts, building your career as a mystic fortune teller or developing your alchemic skills to brew elixirs with potent effects.  Elixirs give you the power to turn other Sims into zombies, boost your learning abilities to acquire skills faster and more.

8. Does this expansion pack come with any limited edition content?
Kari: Yes, we’re excited to be working with Popcap’s Plants vs. Zombies to bring exclusive limited edition content to those who pre-order The Sims 3 Supernatural . The special limited edition Plants vs. Zombies content pack features the famous peashooter from Plants vs. Zombies that will help to protect your Sims by warding off any brain-hungry zombies who happen to shuffle onto your lot. The limited edition content pack will also include iconic zombie-themed clothing items from Plants vs. Zombies.
